SHIFTING GEARS TO HELP THE AGING POPULATION:
To lift the spirits of residents living in nursing home facilities and VA Medical Centers, we visited with our programs, “Stories for Seniors” and “20 Wonderful Things.” I created two new programs – Stories for Seniors and 20 Wonderful Things. The new programs were a way to approach the topic of depression without actually sharing my personal story. I visited 21 facilities between December and August – several places I visited multiple times.
I collected and distributed 1200 stuffed animals and 300 lap blankets – knitted and crocheted afghans, holiday throw blankets and even delicate baby blankets. I gave them to the folks in wheelchairs. My mother, son and daughter joined me as we read stories and did cognitive, inspirational and tactile activities with the residents.
I collected 1200 stuffed animals and 300 blankets via my requests on Craig’s List for assistance. Responses came from the students at Holland Junior High, the youth group of Kol Emet synagogue, and many individuals. I gave a stuffed animal, a Team of Angels pin or a blanket to the residents. Listed below are some of the facilities where I visited:
1. Delaware Valley Veteran’s Home
2. Southeastern VA Medical Center, 4 visits
3. Mother Teresa’s Shelter in Norristown
